Why I Chose to Go to a CPF Service Centre
I had initially been under the impression that I could not continue my insurance coverage after closing my CPF account.

While looking through the CPF account closure form, however, I noticed a clause relating to MediShield Life and other insurance coverage. I called CPF to enquire and was told that I should write in if I wanted to continue the coverage after my account closure. This topic is also addressed in CPF's FAQ section.

Since I needed to submit the CPF account closure anyway, I decided to make an appointment at a CPF Service Centre and deal with both matters at the same time. I managed to get an appointment for the following day. I arrived early, but the queue numbers were called according to appointment time rather than arrival time, so there really was no need to arrive much earlier.

The officer who attended to me could not directly lodge my request regarding continuation of the insurance coverage as part of the account closure application. We still had to use the Write to Us method, and she assisted me with that before proceeding with the CPF account closure.

I had brought a printed copy of the account closure application form with me, but it was not needed. The details were entered electronically and I signed the application there. The supporting documents that I brought were scanned.

Documents I Submitted
- Malaysian NRIC
- Passport
- Singapore NRIC
- ICA PR renunciation letter
- Bank letter/statement showing my full name and bank account number

I still had my physical Blue IC with me during the CPF appointment and returned it to ICA via registered mail immediately afterwards.

CPF may request other supporting documents depending on the individual case, so I would still check the latest document requirements before submitting the application.

What Happens to My Insurance
I received a response from CPF regarding my insurance coverage continuity, confirming what would happen to my existing coverage. I was insured under an Integrated Shield Plan (IP) administered by Singlife, which consisted of two components: the MediShield Life component and the additional private insurance coverage.

In my case, CPF confirmed that the MediShield Life component would remain active until 30 November 2026. From 1 December 2026, I could continue under a non-IP plan administered by Singlife, provided I made the necessary premium payment arrangements directly with Singlife. Once my CPF account is closed, MediSave can no longer be used for the premiums, so payment would need to be made directly to the insurer.

CPF advised me to contact Singlife before 1 December to make the necessary arrangements and avoid a lapse in coverage. My CareShield Life, on the other hand, was terminated with immediate effect from the date my PR renunciation was approved.

I have since written to Singlife and shared CPF’s response with them and am currently waiting for their reply regarding the exact continuation arrangements for my private insurance coverage and will update this article once I receive confirmation.

Receiving My CPF Funds
I opted to receive my CPF savings into my Singapore bank account, as I felt this was the most straightforward option for me. CPF currently states that the processing time for most account closure applications is around 12 weeks from receipt of all required documents.

There is also a separate application route available specifically to Malaysians, which CPF currently states has a normal processing time of around 6 weeks. Under this option, the CPF savings are paid out by Cashier’s Order for deposit into a Malaysian bank account. I decided not to use this route as I preferred to receive the funds directly into my Singapore bank account.

I’ll update this article once the account closure has been completed and I have actually received the funds, including sharing how long the entire process took in my case.

Official information
For the latest account closure requirements, application methods, processing times and supporting documents, refer directly to CPF’s official page on closing your account after leaving Singapore.

I believe this was because my PR status had not yet been fully updated in the system and CPF was still detecting my status as a Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR). The online account closure application is only available once you are no longer a Singapore Citizen (SC) or Permanent Resident (PR).

My NRIC was greyed out in Singpass two days after my PR renunciation approval. Based on my experience, I would therefore wait until your NRIC has been greyed out before trying to submit the application online.

Other Ways to Submit the Application
If the online application doesn't work, there are other ways to submit the account closure application.

1. Make an appointment and submit it at a CPF Service Centre if you are still in Singapore.
2. Print the application form and submit it with the supporting documents through CPF’s Write To Us page.
3. If you are overseas, submit the application by registered post after the required documents have been certified by a Singapore Overseas Mission or through the applicable apostille process.

In my case, I eventually chose to make an appointment at a CPF branch because I also wanted to clarify what would happen to my existing insurance coverage after my CPF account was closed.

This reflects my own experience and the information available to me in October 2026. CPF procedures, processing times and requirements can change, so always check the latest information directly with CPF.

I received my PR renunciation approval on 7 October 2026 and attempted to submit my CPF account closure online using Singpass. At that point, my Singpass app was still working and my NRIC was still showing as blue. However, I kept receiving the error message:

“Sorry, we are unable to proceed with this application.”
